A distinctive British home: Bentley Wood House

Bentley Wood House is a Russian-born architect Sergei, who designed a house for his own family. It is designed by Warnev and Eric, Mendelssohn. Like the De la Warr Pavilion, it is a landmark of British modernism. The biggest feature of this home is its consideration of the natural environment, which was less considered in the architectural design of the time. Due to its love of the sun and outdoor sports, its design focuses on the south facade facing the courtyard, separated from the foyer, kitchen, and maid’s room. Sitting on a platform above the courtyard floor, the platform’s brick pavement extends into the courtyard, and the fully open movable glass windows allow the interior and exterior spaces to blend naturally. The first floor is the living room, study and dining room, and the second floor is the bedroom, including the master bedroom, children’s room and guest room, which are soundproofed by cork walls. In order to show respect for the local tradition, the building materials abandoned the use of reinforced concrete and wood and brick, and the wainscots used Canadian red cedar.
